A state commission asked lawmakers to dedicate all Louisiana sports betting revenue to go to early childhood education. The Early Childhood Care and Education Commission wants the state to fund education initiatives for children up to three years old. 

Senator Beth Mizell and Representative Stephanie Hilferty are co-chairs of the commission. It includes representatives from the executive branch and leaders from the business, nonprofit, and education sectors. 

If the state uses the $85 million in education, it will get an economic benefit of around $1.8 billion in the next decade. However, failure to invest in early education would see losses of $12.1 billion in the next decade. 

Use of Louisiana Sports Betting Revenue

Also, it provides $475 million for early child care. When combined with other stimulus grants, the state would get more than $1 billion for child care and their families. 

The Louisiana Department of Education needs to spend all the stimulus money by September 30, 2024. Although the stimulus provides short-term solutions to the problem, the state needs to look for long-term solutions. 

The federal stimulus funds will provide the state with the opportunity to solve some immediate early childhood problems. However, Louisiana needs to fun initiatives for the long run after the stimulus funds run out.
